The Cubs have Yan Gomes and Miguel Amaya at the big league level, and have signed Jorge Alfaro to a minor league deal to be their veteran depth guy/Spring Training insurance. The other option is for the Giants to trade him to a club that has a semi-desperate need for a back-up catcher on the big league roster. But having him as a third catcher on the big league roster doesn’t feel tenable, for the Cubs or Giants or any other club.

I’m sure a lot of clubs would love to be able to have him at Triple-A as depth/to work with, and sometimes the bat does come later for catchers.

If that happens, I don’t see the Cubs claiming Bart, other than perhaps with an intent to try to waive him, themselves, and outright him to Triple-A.

Bart is out of minor league options, so the Giants either have to keep him as a third catcher on the 26-man roster on Opening Day, or they have to pass him through waivers. He is still only 27 and plays capable defense behind the plate, so I’m sure there are a number of organizations that would be happy to have him as depth. That could be that for former top prospect Joey Bart, who just never hit in the big leagues with the Giants ( remember those rumors about the Kris Bryant trade? good thing that didn’t happen!). The Giants are signing offensive catcher Tom Murphy to a two-year deal, pairing him with defensive whiz Patrick Bailey.
